Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865) war ein ungarndeutscher Chirurg und Geburtshelfer im Kaisertum Österreich. Er studierte an den Universitäten Pest und Wien Medizin und erhielt 1844 seinen Doktorgrad an der Universität Wien.
